Description
Known as Greater Celandine, Nipplewort, Swallowwort and Tetterwork. It is no longer used as much as a herbal remedies medicinal plant but was once chewed to ease toothache. C. Majus can grow to around half a metre tall with bright sunny flowers and yellow stamens that protrude from the single flower heads. Greater Celandine is a native wildflower to Europe and Western Asia.
Seen as a weed by most, this plant produces lots of seeds, which are sought after by ants. Despite sharing a common name with lesser celandine (Ficaria verna), the herbaceous plants are from different families. Mature plants can reach up to 45cm tall
