Description
Single snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) are one of the earliest flowering bulbs of the year, bringing welcome colour to the winter garden from January to March. These classic native plants are a familiar and much-loved sight in woodlands and gardens across the UK.
Snowdrops thrive in partial shade and prefer moist, well-drained, rich soil, especially humus-rich soils similar to those found on woodland floors. Once planted, they spread steadily over time, forming graceful drifts of white flowers that return reliably each year.

How to Identify
Single snowdrops are easy to recognise by their delicate, nodding white flowers and fresh green foliage.
Each flower has three outer petals and shorter inner petals marked with small green patterns. The slender leaves emerge from the base, and plants typically reach around 10cm in height, forming neat, attractive clumps.
Galanthus nivalis is the traditional small-flowering snowdrop and the most familiar species seen growing naturally in the UK countryside.
How to Grow
Snowdrop bulbs grow best in dappled shade or partial shade and prefer moist soil that is rich in organic matter. They suit a wide range of locations, from woodland-style plantings to borders, lawns, and containers.
For best results, plant snowdrop bulbs around 10cm deep and 10cm apart in autumn. Snowdrops can also be planted “in the green” in early spring, which is one of the most reliable ways to establish them.
They will grow in most soil types, provided the ground does not become waterlogged. Over time, clumps can be gently lifted and divided to encourage further spread.
