Description
Also called spur valerian, kiss-me-quick, fox’s brush Devil’s Beard and Jupiter’s beard,is a popular garden plant grown for its ornamental flowers. Because it can tolerate the lime in mortar, Centranthus ruber may frequently be seen growing in old walls in Italy, southern France and south-west England. Both leaves and roots can be eaten, the leaves either fresh in salads or lightly boiled, the roots boiled in soups.
Red valerian is a perennial herbaceous plant that is often found throughout the Mediterranean region as it genrally does well in coastal conditions but can be grown with relative ease here in the UK, whether you have a coastal garden or not. During the flowering season, it enjoys full sun and is a drought tolerant plant perfect for pollinating insects.
Its a great nectar source and definitely adds both wildlife value, and beauty to any garden.
Available online here at Naturescape as potted plants. We also offer red valerian plug plants and seeds – for every type of grower.
