Description

Lady’s mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris) is a hardy herbaceous perennial that forms neat clumps of spring green, velvety leaves. One of its most charming features is the way the leaves catch and hold water droplets, giving the plant a sparkling appearance after rain or morning dew.

From June through to September, it produces airy sprays of small, lime-yellow flowers that sit above the foliage and add gentle colour to borders.

Historically, lady’s mantle has been widely used as a medicinal plant across many cultures. Medicinal usages have traditionally been associated with pelvic pain, blood pressure, wound healing, and women’s health and reproductive systems, which is reflected in both its common and botanical names.

How to Identify

Lady’s mantle is easily recognised by its rounded, softly hairy leaves with scalloped edges and a bright green, almost velvety texture. During late spring, the summer yellow-green flowers begin to bloom into loose clusters during summer and create a light, frothy effect above the foliage.

How to Grow

Alchemilla Vulgaris s is an excellent ground cover perennial, ideal for softening path edges, borders and shaded areas of the garden. It is a tough, reliable plant that tolerates a wide range of conditions, from full sun to full shade, though it performs best in partial shade.

Lady’s mantle thrives in moist, well-drained soil and requires very little maintenance once established, making it a dependable choice for shady borders, cottage gardens, and naturalistic planting schemes.
