Description
Fumitory also known as the common fumitory, drug fumitory or earth smoke, is an annual that flowers in the UK from May-September. An annual plant, Fumaria officinalis, prefers loamy soils. Grow fumitory seeds or buy potted plants.
Common fumitory (Fumaria officinalis) is a delicate and charming annual plant found right across the UK. You’ll often spot this familiar wildflower scrambling over waste ground, arable land, and gardens, where it thrives in disturbed soils and loamy soils. Although sometimes thought of as a weed, Common fumitory is a lovely addition to the countryside and a natural part of many farmland landscapes, including fields of winter cereals.
From April to October, Common fumitory brings gentle colour with its pretty sprays of pink flowers. Its old folk name, “earth smoke,” comes from the soft, smoky look of its finely divided grey-green foliage, which gives the plant a light and airy appearance.
In the past, Common fumitory was valued in herbal medicine and was once used to help with skin ailments and even irritable bowel syndrome. Early writers such as Pliny the Elder mentioned the plant, and it was sometimes prepared as “water of fumitory.” However, as it is a mildly poisonous medicinal plant, it is best enjoyed for its beauty rather than used at home today.
How to Identify
Common fumitory is a low-growing, scrambling herbaceous annual that usually reaches around 10cm tall. It has beautifully feathery leaves and slender flower stems topped with small tubular blooms. The delicate flowers are pale pink with deeper crimson red tips, forming loose clusters that create its distinctive, graceful look.
How to Grow
This easy-going wildflower grows happily in full sun and light, well-drained ground. Seeds can be sown directly outdoors in spring or autumn onto freshly prepared, open soil. Once established, Common fumitory needs very little care and will often self-seed naturally. It’s a wonderful choice for wildlife gardens, informal borders, and even potted plants, helping to attract pollinating insects and bring a relaxed, natural feel to any outdoor space.
