The fruits are relished by birds and the flowers attract many insects. The tree is hardy but not tolerant to very strong winds. Cherry plums are large shrubs or small trees reaching ultimate heights of 8–(12) m (25–40 feet) tall. Cherry plum flowers typically late winter to early spring with white flowers, usually from February to April, with cherry plum fruit seen in August.

P. cerasifera is a beautiful ornamental tree that enjoys full to partial shade, and is an excellent wildlife plant for pollinators & birds. The edible fruit is loved by birds

If using as a hedge plant: All species in a wildlife hedge can be cut back or “Coppiced” without harm. In the 1st year after establishment the hedge can be cut back to stimulate growth of the hedge from the base thereafter cut every 2-3 years. If the weather is unsuitable for planting or receiving the hedging, dig a hole and bury the roots of the bunched plants, they can be held like that till planting. After planting it is advantageous to mulch the hedge with lawn mowing or leaf mould to suppress weeds and also be done with plastic or carpet cuts and covered with soil.
