Description
Yellow water lily (Nymphaea Marliacea Chromatella) is a native lily-like plant and a popular aquatic plant for UK ponds. This ornamental water lily thrives in still or slow-moving water and is best grown in full sun.
Best planted in aquatic soil or an aquatic basket, these native aquatic plants help support a healthy pond ecosystem by shading the water, reducing algae growth and providing cover for aquatic life. Fully hardy in northern temperate regions, it is well suited to wildlife ponds, ornamental water features and naturalistic planting schemes.
How to Identify
This yellow waterlily produces large, cup-shaped yellow flowers with golden stamens throughout the growing season. The blooms sit among broad, floating lily pads, which are typically olive green and leathery in texture. Leaves and flowers emerge from submerged rhizomes, creating steady, dense growth without becoming invasive. When in flower, it is one of the most eye-catching pond plants available.
How to Grow
Plant Nymphaea Marliacea Chromatella in a mesh aquatic basket filled with aquatic compost, positioning it at the correct planting depth of around 30–80cm. If the leaves do not initially reach the surface, the basket can be raised on bricks and lowered gradually as growth develops. This aquatic plant performs best in full sun and calm water, away from strong pumps or fountains. Once established, it is low-maintenance, hardy, and provides valuable surface shade and shelter for pond wildlife while attracting wildlife pollinators, including bees.
