Description

Dwarf white water lily (Nymphaea alba candida) is a compact aquatic plant well suited to small ponds, slow-moving streams, pools, and water containers. It is valued for its elegant white flowers and deep green, floating leaves. Flowering from June through to September, this water lily adds gentle colour and calm movement to still water.

The open blooms also attract pollinating insects, including bees, butterflies, and hoverflies, making it a lovely choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.

How to Identify

Nymphaea candida can be identified by its small, cup-shaped white flowers held just above the water surface. The rounded leaves are a rich green, floating flat on the water and forming a neat, compact spread compared to larger water lily species.

How to Grow

For best results, plant miniature water lily Nymphaea candida in full sun, allowing a spread of around 30 cm. It prefers a planting depth of 10–30 cm and still or slow-moving water, as water lilies do not thrive in constantly splashing or turbulent conditions.

Remove fading flowers and dying foliage regularly to keep the plant tidy and encourage continued flowering. As water lilies are heavy feeders, applying an aquatic fertiliser in spring will support healthy growth and abundant blooms throughout the summer.
