Description

Water avens (Geum rivale) is a moisture-loving British native perennial commonly found in damp habitats such as riversides, wet woodlands, marshy grassland, and wet meadows. It is locally common across much of the UK.

Flowering from May to September, water avens produce distinctive nodding flowers that add subtle colour and movement to naturalistic planting schemes. Its conservation status is common, and it is well suited to bog gardens, pond margins, and damp wildlife gardens where soils remain consistently moist.

How to identify

Water avens is easily recognised by its nodding, bell-shaped flowers, which hang delicately from slender purple stems. Each flower features deep red or purple sepals, peach-coloured petals, and a cluster of yellow stamens, creating a striking two-tone effect.

The plant forms a low clump of rounded, softly textured leaves at the base, with flowering stems rising above to a height of up to 50cm. After flowering, the blooms develop into feathery seed heads, extending its visual interest into late summer.

How to grow

Water avens thrives in moist to wet soils and performs best in full sun or partial shade. It is ideal for pond edges, stream banks, bog gardens, wet meadows, and damp woodland margins, where it will naturalise gently without becoming invasive.

Hardy and low maintenance, this herbaceous perennial establishes well once planted and benefits wildlife by attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects. These in turn help support frogs, toads, and other garden wildlife, making water avens a valuable choice for biodiverse planting schemes.
