Melancholy Thistle

Description

Melancholy thistle (Cirsium heterophyllum) is a native perennial wildflower of the northern UK, most closely associated with upland hay meadows and damp grassland. It is a distinctive but gentle thistle, valued for its wildlife benefits and suitability for natural meadow planting.

Flowering through summer, Melancholy thistle produces single, rounded purple-pink flower heads that often nod slightly when young. Unlike many native thistles, it lacks prickly edges, making it well-suited to mixed hay meadow and restoration schemes. The plant often forms small clonal patches, adding structure and colour to upland landscapes.

The common name Melancholy thistle comes from its historic use in herbal medicine, where it was once believed to help relieve melancholia, now understood as depression.

How to Identify

Melancholy thistle has tall stems topped with solitary, purple-red flower heads. Its broad green leaves are unarmed and easily recognised by their dense, white-felted undersides. This soft, silvery backing is one of the clearest ways to distinguish it from other Cirsium species.

Best suited to upland hay meadows and wildlife planting, Melancholy thistle thrives in moist, base-rich soils in full sun or partial shade. It establishes well in meadow seed beds and benefits from traditional hay meadow management, where cutting is delayed until after flowering and seed production.
