Description
Anthemis arvensis, also known as corn chamomile, mayweed, scentless chamomile, or field chamomile is a daisy like annual that can grow on most soil types but is partial to light chalky calcareous soils or sandy soils. Great for filling field margins and other arable land
Corn chamomile (Anthemis arvensis) is a charming, daisy-like annual wildflower native to the UK. Commonly found on arable land and along field margins, it grows happily on most soil types, especially chalk, alkaline, and sandy soils. This easy-going plant is a lovely addition to any wildflower meadow or garden setting.
Throughout the summer, corn chamomile produces bright, cheerful flower heads with crisp white ray florets surrounding sunny yellow centres. Growing to around 20–30cm tall, its finely divided, feathery foliage has a soft, airy appearance that blends beautifully with other wildflowers.
As well as being attractive, this classic British species is highly valued for wildlife. The nectar-rich blooms provide an important food source for bees, butterflies, and many other pollinating insects, helping to support healthy, biodiverse gardens.
How to Identify
Corn chamomile is easily recognised by its delicate, fern-like leaves and traditional daisy-style flowers. Each flower head features broad white ray florets arranged around golden yellow centres, giving it a bright and familiar meadow look. The plant has a neat, upright habit and a gentle, aromatic foliage scent.
How to Grow
Corn chamomile thrives best in full sun and well-drained ground, particularly on chalky or sandy soils. It is best grown from wildflower seeds sown directly outdoors in spring or early autumn onto bare, cultivated soil.
Once established, it needs very little care and will often self-seed naturally, returning year after year. It’s ideal for creating natural displays in wildflower meadows, borders, or open areas where it can mingle freely with other wildflower species.
Whether you’re planting a small garden patch or a larger meadow area, Anthemis arvensis is a simple and rewarding way to bring bright colour and life to your outdoor space.
