Description
Slender club-rush (Isolepis cernua, syn. Scirpus cernuus) is an evergreen herbaceous annual or short-lived aquatic perennial belonging to the sedge family (Cyperaceae). Other common names include low bulrush or fibre-optic grass. It is valued for its fine texture and compact form. This species is well-suited to damp soils, pond margins, bog gardens, coastal habitats, and containers, where it adds movement and a contemporary feel to planting schemes.
How to identify
Slender club-rush grows to a height of 15–30cm, forming neat clumps of very narrow, thread-like green leaves. From mid to late summer, each stem is topped with a single small, silvery-white, petal-less flowerhead, giving the plant its distinctive fibre-optic appearance. These flowers are followed by small brown-red seedheads, which persist into late summer and early autumn.
How to grow
Isolepis cernua thrives in consistently wet to moist sandy soils and performs best in full sun or light partial shade. It is ideal for pond margins, shallow water planting, damp borders, and container displays, where soil should never be allowed to dry out. Although compact, it can self-seed gently in suitable conditions, creating a naturalistic and informal look without becoming invasive.
