Description
Bugle (Ajuga reptans) is a charming, low-growing native wildflower valued for its dense mats of evergreen foliage and vibrant blue flowers. From April to July, it produces attractive upright flower spikes that create a colourful carpet in gardens and natural settings.
Naturally found in damp grasslands, woodland clearings, and shady corners, this hardy perennial is well suited to a wide range of conditions. The nectar-rich blooms provide an important food source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects, making bugle a valuable plant for wildlife-friendly gardens.
How to Identify
Bugle is easily recognised by its glossy, evergreen leaves and short spikes of small, vivid blue flowers held above the foliage.
It forms a spreading, carpet-like habit and typically grows to around 20cm in height. The creeping stems root as they grow, allowing the plant to gradually form dense, attractive ground cover.
How to Grow
Ajuga reptans thrives in full sun, partial shade, or dappled shade, making it ideal for tricky areas where many plants struggle. It grows best in moist, well-drained soil but will tolerate a variety of conditions once established.
With its creeping habit, bugle is excellent for use as low-maintenance ground cover, helping to suppress weeds and fill gaps in borders. It works particularly well under shrubs, around spring bulbs, or in shaded garden corners.
Tough and easy to care for, bugle is a versatile and reliable choice for a wide range of garden settings, providing year-round interest with minimal effort.
