Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina) is one of the UK’s most elegant native ferns, prized for its soft, feathery foliage and graceful appearance. This hardy deciduous fern is commonly found in damp woodlands, shaded valleys, and along stream banks, where it brings texture and movement to the landscape.
Its delicate, fresh green fronds make Lady Fern an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders and natural planting schemes. Easy to grow and low maintenance, it adds lush foliage throughout the growing season before dying back in autumn and re-emerging each spring.
How to Identify
Lady Fern forms elegant clumps of finely divided, light green fronds with a soft, lace-like appearance. The upright, arching foliage is more delicate than many other native ferns, creating an airy, graceful display. As a deciduous fern, the fronds die back in winter before fresh new growth emerges in spring.
How to Grow
Lady Fern grows best in partial or full shade in moist, fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It thrives in woodland conditions and benefits from adding leaf mould or garden compost before planting to help retain moisture.
Once established, Lady Fern requires very little maintenance, making it ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, pond margins and planting beneath trees and shrubs. It can also be divided in spring or autumn to create new plants.
