Golden Scale Male Fern

Description

Scaly male fern (Dryopteris affinis), also known as golden scale male fern, is a hardy, semi-evergreen fern native to the British Isles and wider Europe. This clump-forming woodland fern is well suited to moist, shady spaces, shaded borders and being planted beneath semi-mature trees.

It forms an upright crown of evergreen fronds that emerge fresh yellow-green in spring before deepening to rich green as the season progresses. The stems are covered in distinctive golden-brown scales, giving the plant year-round texture and interest.

How to Identify

Dryopteris affinis has erect, bipinnate fronds arranged in a tidy rosette. The fronds are firm and leathery, with finely divided leaflets and scaly frond stems. One of its key identifying features is the dense crown of golden scales along the stalks and central ribs. The fern retains much of its foliage through winter in sheltered locations, making it a valuable semi-evergreen garden fern for structure in shaded gardens.

How to Grow

Scaly male fern thrives in full shade to partial shade, including light shade, and prefers moist but well-drained soil. It performs particularly well in soil enriched with leaf mould or composted organic matter and is tolerant of most soil types, provided they do not become waterlogged.

Once established, it is a low-maintenance plant requiring little care beyond removing old fronds in late winter to allow fresh growth to emerge. Fully hardy and reliable, it is an excellent choice for woodland planting schemes, shaded borders and naturalistic garden designs.
