Description

Species Information

Wild Clematis (Clematis vitalba), also known as Traveller’s Joy or Old Man’s Beard, is a fast-growing native climbing plant commonly found scrambling through hedgerows, woodland edges, and chalk grassland across the UK. This vigorous deciduous climber produces masses of creamy-white flowers from July to September, followed by distinctive silky seed heads that give the plant its familiar name.

Wild Clematis is a valuable wildlife species, providing nectar for bees and other pollinating insects, while its dense growth offers shelter for birds and small mammals. Its climbing habit makes it ideal for covering fences, trellises, and mature trees in naturalistic planting schemes.

How to Identify

Old Man’s Beard has long, twining woody stems and divided green leaves made up of oval leaflets. During summer, clusters of fragrant greenish-white flowers appear, followed by silky, feathery seed heads that remain on the plant well into winter, making it easy to recognise throughout the year.

How to Grow

Wild Clematis grows best in full sun or light shade in moist, well-drained soil, thriving particularly in alkaline or chalky soils. Once established, it requires very little maintenance.

Provide a fence, trellis or other support for the stems to climb, and prune back as needed to keep growth under control. Ideal for wildlife gardens, hedgerows and woodland planting, Old Man’s Beard is an excellent choice for adding height, seasonal interest and valuable habitat for pollinating insects.
