Often known as Lady’s smock Mayflower or Milkmaids. In folklore it was said to be sacred to the fairies, and so was unlucky if brought indoors. It was not included in May Day garlands for the same reason. It generally comes into bloom around the time the cuckoo starts to call, hence the name. Young leaves of the Cuckooflower have a rather peppery taste and can be a useful substitute for cress in sandwiches and salads.
