Also known as bloody geranium, It is also the county flower of Northumberland. The typical habitat of this species is grassland, sand dunes and open woodland on calcareous soils, including rocky slopes.

Often this species needs to be planted just before the frost or needs a long period of cold for Stratification, so its seed dormancy can be overcome.
